The SmarK RAW Rant – May 24, 2004

- Live from Rockford, IL.

- Your hosts are JR & King

- Happy Victoria Day! Hope you all stopped to, uh, contemplate Queen Victoria or whatever people do on meaningless holidays such as this one.

- Now here’s a witty plug for my new book, via Stephen “Crimefighter” Lucas’s MPW report on RSPW. The pertinent passage…

Every time I come to an MPW show, someone complains about me talking about
it. EVERY TIME. And they get madder when I refute and rebut their
complaints. So anyone reading this, I should point out there's a greater
threat against the wrestling world than me. If you are a fan of Scott
Keith, or ARE Scott Keith, you are considered a menace to the wrestling
world and must be silenced. Keith is destroying the WWE every time he
writes a Smark RAW Rant, or a SmarkDown Rant. In fact, he single-handedly
destroyed WCW giving several matches negative stars on their PPV's. He must
not be allowed to succeed in destroying the WWE, cause if the WWE is
destroyed, then the whole wrestling industry is destroyed. He must be
banished from the Internet before it's too late! It is vital you email the
owners of 411mania.com and tell them they must drop his column immediately
and contact the publisher of his upcoming book, "One Ring Circus: The Death
of the World Wrestling Federation", that being Citadel Press and demand they
suppress this book from being released right away. The health of the
wrestling industry depends on your quick action now!!!

So remember -- don’t buy my new book unless you want to contribute to the downfall of the industry. And who doesn’t, really?

- In the back, HHH talks Uncle Eric into a match with Shawn Michaels at Bad Blood, and rallies the Evolution troops as only he can.

- Opening match: Edge v. Ric Flair. Edge works a hammerlock to start but gets slugged down, so he comes back with a clothesline that puts Flair on the floor. They brawl outside and Edge wins that pretty easily and pounds away in the corner, but gets tripped up with Randy Orton and falls victim to the EYEPOKE OF DEATH. Flair takes over and slugs away in the corner, setting up the snapmare into the kneedrop. They slug it out and Edge comes back with a forearm and clothesline, and the signal cuts out. We return with Flair getting covered for two off what I presume was the Flair Flip. Orton distracts him and Flair gets a rollup for two, but Benjamin runs out to get rid of Orton, and the spear finishes Flair at 5:04. This was fine, more intended to put heat on the Benjamin-Orton program than anything else. *1/2

- Meanwhile, Vince announces a “$250,000” Diva contest. Calling ANYTHING on a wrestling show “reality TV” is the strangest irony you can think of. On the other hand, there’s worse trends to jump on than the lame “star search” ripoffs polluting the Fox network 24 hours a day.

- Meanwhile, we now know Lita’s answer, but we don’t know the question. It’s like Jeopardy for idiots or something. Speaking of which, Matt and Lita do some of their A-level acting and get back together. Too little, too late for Matt. Lita goes to get her stuff and we switch to a cameraman who was standing inside her dressing room, where Kane is waiting. You’d think the guy would WARN them. I HATE IT when they do that Hollywood shot-setup stuff, because it doesn’t work for wrestling and just takes the viewer out of the moment. And so the terrible, terrible Kane storyline continues.

- Meanwhile, HHH and Batista ambush a helpless Steven Richards, who happens to look a lot like Shawn Michaels from a distance. Instead of apologizing, HHH kicks him in the ribs again, which is pretty funny.

- La Resistance v. Hurricane & Rosey. It’s time for some serious repackaging on the face side. Conway starts with Rosey and slugs away, but gets tossed. Back in, Hurricane gets a double-team legdrop for two. A cheapshot turns the tide, as Hurricane gets dumped and abused by Grenier, and they work him over in the corner. Grenier goes to work on the leg and Conway takes him down into an anklelock, but Hurricane escapes with an enzuigiri. Tags abound and Rosey cleans house and drops a leg on Grenier, but gets caught from behind by Conway. Hurricane gets a blind leg and comes in with a high cross on Grenier for two. Rosey dumps Conway, but Hurricane’s knee gives way on a Shining Wizard attempt, and Grenier gets the rollup pin at 4:03. As long as Conway stays in, La Rez is fine. *1/4

- Meanwhile, HHH is still waiting for Shawn, and he gets blindsided by the same.

- Highlight Reel time, as Jericho gloats about putting Christian out of action, and welcomes Randy Orton to the show. Apparently Steve Austin has now been added to the list of legends killed by Orton. He’s still not gonna defend against Shelton, so Jericho asks the hard questions about ducking challengers like he’s Michael Landsberg or something, and questions Orton’s testicular fortitude. That earns him a smack, and the brawl is on, which of course leads to Batista joining the fight, and Benjamin saving. I sense a tag match tonight. Next, in fact.

- Shelton Benjamin & Chris Jericho v. Randy Orton & Batista. We’re joined in progress, as Jericho works a headlock on Orton. Jericho gets a bow-and-arrow, and then dodges a charge and clotheslines Orton out of the corner for two. Shelton comes in, but that brings in Batista and they fight over a lockup and get nowhere. Batista uses the POWER OF THE POSE to intimidate him, but since Shelton’s not gay (that I know of), it doesn’t work. They fight over a lockup and Batista slams him, but misses an elbow, and Benjamin slugs away on him before walking into a clothesline. And now Orton wants in, as he pounds away with forearms and stomps him down. Evolution works him over in the corner, but Benjamin comes back with a neckbreaker and makes the tag to Jericho. He chops away on Orton and takes him down a few times, into the Walls, but he releases and hits Batista with the springboard dropkick. Bulldog and Lionsault for Orton, but it misses, so Jericho recovers with another Walls of Jericho, releasing AGAIN to deal with Batista. Evolution bails, so Jericho follows them with the springboard tope, and we take a break. This will probably come as a shock, but Evolution is in control when we return, as they pound on Jericho. Orton works on the arm in rather nasty fashion, and Batista uses the ropes to continue. Into a top wristlock, but Jericho fights out, so Batista clotheslines him for two. Jericho fights back on Orton now, but gets taken down into a short-arm scissors for his troubles. Jericho fights out, but Orton uses an armbar takedown to stop his comeback. Benjamin gets too excited and distracts the ref, allowing some shenanigans from Evolution and a cross-armbreaker from Batista. Well, he’s no Giant Silva. In the good way. Jericho escapes with a dropkick and Orton comes in to finish, but Jericho blocks the RKO and makes the hot tag to Benjamin. Shoulderblock and Dragon Whip for Batista gets two. Blinger Splash is caught by Batista, but Jericho dropkicks him into a sunset flip for two. Batista hits him with a spinebuster for two, but Jericho saves. Orton dumps Jericho and goes for a suplex, but Benjamin rolls him up for two. Powerslam gets two. Jericho dumps Batista and Benjamin powerslams Orton for the pin at 16:23, although it looked like an attempt at an Exploider. Good stuff, although not Benoit-level tag stuff like it’s been for the past few weeks. Batista continues to improve LOTS. ***1/4

- Afterwards, Jericho goes after color commentator Trish like an idiot and gets powerbombed through the table by Tyson Tomko. I hope he doesn’t get saddled with that guy at the PPV.

- Kane joins us to tell Chris Benoit that he wants his World title. No shit, Sherlock.

- Meanwhile, Shawn secures “his” match at Bad Blood (Hell in a Cell, we shall learn soon enough) and HHH attacks him again. Those crazy kids, they can’t keep their hands off each other! So once he loses yet ANOTHER big match to HHH, will that be enough, storyline-wise, for Shawn to admit that it’s over?

- Victoria v. Molly Holly. This is non-title, as Victoria has now lost the TATU theme and has generic shitty dance music now, complete with goofy dance entrance. Molly quickly dumps Victoria with the help of Gail Kim, and they work her over on the floor. Back in, Molly gets two. Snap suplex gets two. We hit the chinlock, and that goes on for a while. Victoria gets a backslide for two and goes for the standing moonsault, but gets distracted by Gail. She comes back with the Widow’s Peak for the pin at 4:15. Victoria bores the shit out of me now. *1/2 Gail Kim tries the beatdown, but Victoria fights them off.

- Meanwhile, Uncle Eric tells Johnny Nitro to assemble the musicians in the ring. When we come back from the break, Eric tells them all to prevent Poochie and Poochette from continuing to wreck the show. I love how they group World champion Benoit in there with the rest of the jobbers and losers.

- Meanwhile, Regal & Eugene prep for the tag match tonight, but Nitro informs them that Regal isn’t cleared to wrestle yet, so Eugene either has to find a partner or go it alone. Regal once again tells him to stand up for himself and be a man.

- Garrison Cade & Coach v. Eugene & Chris Benoit. Oh, they’re so dead now. Benoit pounds Cade with chops and a clothesline to start, and a snap suplex. Crowd wants Eugene, so Benoit brings him in and he takes Cade down with a headlock. Heel miscommunication puts Coach on the floor and they criss-cross until Eugene outsmarts (?!) Cade and gets an eyepoke. Back to Benoit as he unloads on Cade in the corner and whips him into the corner, then drops a vicious elbow on the back of his neck. They slug it out in the corner, but Cade gets a corner clothesline and pounds him down. Coach time, as he’s actually drawing real heel heat, and he gets about 2.5 seconds of offense before Benoit chops him into shreds. Cade gets a cheapshot, but Benoit shrugs it off and keeps destroying Coach. Rolling germans sets up the flying headbutt, and then Benoit lets Eugene hit his own version on Coach for the pin at 4:42. They’re going balls-out trying to give Eugene every star rub possible, and I love it. Kudos to Coach for, in the words of Steve Earle, shutting up and dying like an aviator here. **

- Main event interview: Shawn Michaels tries to call out HHH, but it turns into an Evolution attack until Spinal Fusion make the save, leaving it a one-on-one brawl between the principles. Everyone charges out of the locker room to pull them apart (even A-Train, persona non grata for months now), but they keep fighting, so Bischoff announces it’s Hell in a Cell at the PPV, and we’re out at 11PM EST sharp.

The Bottom Line:

Weak ending to the show, with HHH continuing to put the focus on himself and Benoit-Kane getting a ludicrously stupid non-build thus far, so obviously that’s what their banking on Bad Blood as far as delivering the buyrate. We know they can probably bring in the goods in the match, so I’m interested in it for that, but the feud has gone WAY too long and it’s obvious who’s gonna leave it as the winner.

Anyway, a good but not blowaway show this week, as it was lacking a hot angle and a **** main event, but it was fun enough to continue the good show streak.

As a reminder, no more Smackdown rants from me, so I’ll see you again next week.

Not to nitpick, but Edge and Shelton Benjamin were standing front and center next to Benoit with that crowd of jobbers too.

What bugged me about the segment was that Shawn and Hunter are portrayed as unstoppable forces that can't coexist or be controlled by the management. Meanwhile, Benoit--who is not only supposed to be an equal of Shawn and Hunter, but is the world friggin' champion--just stands around doing whatever the boss tells him to so he won't get fired.

It's really just a subtle little thing, and I'm not even sure it was intentional, but I didn't like what I read into the scene. Given that Bischoff singled Benoit out because, as champion, he should care about maintaining order on Raw, it would have been better if Benoit said "Yeah, I'll stop your whiny little babies, but I'll do it for Raw, not because of your pussy little threats." Or something along those lines. It'd be consistent with Benoit's character and still build to the HHH/HBK climax.

Judging from his stupidity tonight, Cade probably looks in the mirror and thinks it's some other guy staring back at him.

I can't stand Victoria as a face. She's nothing more than Jazz on uppers. Actually, I would very much like to see a Jazz/Victoria rivalry. Especially if Jazz keeps beating her to the point where Victoria goes psycho again and redeems her self-respect. I thought Molly would be the one to do it, but after losing her hair, the WWE could care less what happens to her.

I don't mind this revisionist history, just as I don't mind that they claim the Big Show "retired" Hulk Hogan just because Hogan happened to lose his last WWE match to Show. But is the Orton/Austin lie based on any truth at all? I can't remember anything resembling a confrontation between the two.

Orton pinned HBK at Survivor Series, which costs Austin his GM job. So in a way, Orton did end his career.

Of course, then I remember that Austin was brought back anyway as a hokey law enforcement character, then put himself over at WM over 2 sell-outs, and then was promptly booted by the WWE.

Did anyone else happen to notice that that pull apart brawl basically implied that the entire rest of the roster combined (minus Edge, Benoit, and the rest of Evolution) pales in comparison to Michaels and HHH? I mean when twenty or so wrestlers can't keep a middle-aged semi-retiree and another guy apart, you're labelling them as both weak and stupid.

I didn't really enjoy this weeks show at all. While Raw is deffinately the hot show right now, and they do have a good number of Main Eventers, along with guys who are ready to be in the Main Event, its pretty obvious it's still going to be Triple H's show, one way or another. Bad Blood is going to feature a World Champion who's match isn't considered a "main event" unless HHH is in it, facing a challanger who stole the title shot HHH had won before HBK showed up. The shows recently have featured HBK/HHH as the Main Event fued, eventhough they BOTH were supposed to have been clearly defeated by Benoit, the World Champion, who is now wrestling a lame duck challanger who he has yet to even have a physical encounter with. The message is obvious: With or without the World Title, Triple H is still the featured guy on Raw and the World Title Match is only important if HHH is in it.

So it's on to Bad Blood, where HBK will steal the show in HITC but Triple H will get the win, proving that HITC is "his match", and then we go to Summerslam where Hunter faces Benoit, 1 on 1 for the first time, and beats him cleanly, proving that Benoit's wins were the direct result of the Triple Threat situation, and that one on one HHH is the better man. Same old same old by Summerslam.

Other Raw thoughts:

The Eugene/Regal storyline makes me think that Regal is going to turn on him soon. I think if they were going to go with the "Regal slowly warms up to Eugene" story, than they would have a longer build, teasing if Regal will do the right thing. Having Regal clearly be in favor of Eugene so early makes me think that he's going to make the turn shortly.

I'm guessing Lita had to fuck Kane all week in order for him to leave her and Matt alone. Something along those lines.

I'm actually starting to like Orton, eventhough he was pushed down our throats during his initial push. I could buy him as a World Title contender if they had him turn on HHH, take over Evolution and be the one to beat Benoit for the title. But that would be both A) Something new, and B) Not revolving around HHH, so I don't see it happening.

Any hope for Jericho at all? He went from trading wins with a mid-carder, to being layed out by his bodygaurd? He seems to be moving further down the ladder, if thats possible. Welcome the return of the Jericho from 2000/2001, where he's more over than most of the roster, but never get half the push less-deserving/entertaining guys will.

Over all, not a bad Raw, in my opinion, just seemed to be a step back in the direction we just came from. (HHH is Raw)

I agree with your overall sentiment. This week's show fell flat with the focus being on a tired feud that ran its course over a year ago. Makes me very glad I wasn't one of the ones fellating HHH when he was jobbing to Shelton, because I knew the other foot was going to drop sooner or later.

Anyone else think Raw sort of dropped the ball with HBK? He's been over, he can still put on better matches than most of the roster, but he's been jobbing in all his big matches lately. They keep him in the Main Event, but he never wins and doesn't seem to be going anywhere. I'd rather him beat HHH at HITC, and then fued with Benoit into Summerslam. Maybe even give him the belt and have him move it onto Orton?
I just think there's more they can do with him besides jobbing him out and moving him to Smackdown, eventhough they do need him.

I think we're going to have a swap of HHH and HBK in their respective alignments. When Trips yelled at Evolution about not showing up last week, they made lame "we were out late the night before" excuses. Then, after that, Batista was watching H's back until Trips told him to go get the others. Immediately after he left, HBK showed up.

Now, I could be looking for things where they aren't, but I think Evolution set him up both times and HBK's going to join.

Peace

Maybe it's just, or not, you all can either back me up or disagree on this, but- I noticed the beginning of Benoit's entrance theme is starting to get up there with the beginning's of The Rock and Austin. Man, I totally marked out tonight. When Eugene had to come up with a partner on the spot, I thought "Well, it won't be Rocky, and there couldn't possibly be anybody as cool." I gave up on the match and turned to my spider solitaire...when I heard the familiar music. I had all but given up on seeing Benoit wrestle tonight, and he was the last guy I expected to help Eugene, so I marked like a Sharpie. I don't know if "ChrisBenoitishere, andhe'sreallymad" is getting up there with the glass and "if ya smell..." with the fans, but it sure is with me.

My one problem with Benoit's theme is that, while "Whatever" is a fine song built around a wrestler's entrance theme (that is, Benoit's original music), the song itself is not designed to be a wrestling theme. It's got the sudden start, but before you get to the rocking hook Benoit is already in the ring and they cut the music. Matt Hardy's "Live for the Moment" would have the same problem except that they edited and mixed it so that you get right to the chorus and stay there until the bell rings.

Raw thoughts

1. All things considered. It was so much easier to post anon. and just leave a "Steve B" to id myself.

How do I post a picture. I have the perfect one I'd like to use for me (and no, it's not Master Shake). Does it have to be a certain size?

2. Smackdown -- Scott, you still going to do a SD post? Not recap. Just a post so people can post their thoughts (and maybe someone will post a recap, so I don't have to watch it ;-). And by recap, I just mean a short recap. Not some 10 volume written piece).

3. Raw thoughts..

Where were they again? Wow! Jericho was so over!

After that Diva search, I can see it now. Next week: Billionaire Hugh Bunnies war room. Who will win? Vine's Divas (a sex crazed old man who built up a family business all by himself), or Billionaire Hugh's Bunnies (a dim-witted hillbilly from Chicago, who just got lucky). Find out at a future PPV near you!! ;-p

Wait a sec.. this is Vince. Shouldn't it be a a search for Guy Divas? Or better yet for Vince. Big fat sweaty hillbilly guy divas.

Poor Matt. His career now rests entirely on Lita's acting ability. Last time her acting ability broke her neck. Can it break his career?

Victoria's new theme is awful. And that dance. I can't imagine paying to use a Tatu song would cost so much. It's just a Tatu song. I bet Journey songs cost more by now. And it was a good theme for her (they took out the sub-par parts and just left the the chorus). Is she a suppose to be a face or one of those lame 1990 In Living Color dancers? I still wish I could find a good copy Gail Kim's theme. It's not bad.

HA, Fly Girl Victoria.

Didn't she wreck her knee a year or two back and decide instead of having an operation that she'd just 'work through it'? Do you really want someone with a damaged or badly healed knee doing a dancing fool gimmick?

Eugene is massively over

The Eugene phenomenon continues these week with the Chief Jay Strongbow eyepoke and the hilarious Benoit headbutt. If the WWE keeps doing the right thing, this could get to Goldberg streak levels of fun. And the push is justified- Eugene is a GREAT old-school wrestler.

I didn't mind the HHH/HBK program. So what if it took 20 guys to restrain them- get me mad enough to invoke my Irish heritage, and it'll take 20 WWE Superstars for me not to kick someone's ass. And I'm a fat tub of goo! Now, if HHH bitched all next week about Hell in a Cell, that'll kill it for me. I mean, if I hated someone as much as they supposedly do, I'd be all "So what? Hell in a Cell? Good. I don't need Randy or Batista or Flair- I'll kill that sumbitch with my bare hands! He loves Jesus now? GOOD! He can meet him in person when I'm done with him."

Only really bad thing was Victoria's new entrance. Oooh, that's bad. Worst WWE music I've heard in years. And her "Now is the time on Sprockets when we dance" routine sucked. Damn shame- I'm sorta enjoying the Victoria/Gail Kim program otherwise.

The Jericho table smash reminded me just how much I miss having the announcer's table at ringside. I wish they'd bring it back. I still don't understand why they moved it in the first place.

1) Any idea who/what will be on the cover?
2) Will there be free review copies available again like with the last book?

1) Last I heard, Booker T getting press-slammed by someone (Undertaker, I think) is the cover.

2) Yes, contact Richard Ember at Kensington Books (rember@kensingtonbooks.com) and he'll give you the necessary info. That goes for everyone else, too.

1. Christian.
2. Stacy Kiebler (lesson to all the ladies- boobs rule, but beauty conquers all) 2nd place- Molly (sue me)
3. Raw (another sue me- I'm a JR mark)
4. Dunno
5. Benoit by a mile. Notice how he makes everything else better? By putting the emphasis on scientific wrestling, he gets the crowd excited about that style, thus subtlely putting over Y2J, Shelton, and other skilled wrestlers. And that includes Eugene.
